தமிழை தாய்மொழியாகக்கொண்ட, தமிழ் நாட்டிலேயே பிறந்து வளர்ந்த இன்றைய தலைமுறையை சேர்ந்த பலருக்கு ஒரு 50% கூட சரியாக தமிழை பேசவோ எழுதவோ வாசிக்கவோ தெரியவில்லை என்பது எவ்வளவு அவமானமான விஷயம் என்று அவர்களுக்கே புரியவில்லை என்பது வேதனையானது மட்டுமல்ல அதிர்ச்சியானதும் கூட.
என்னதான் உலகப்பொதுமொழியாக இருந்த போதும் ஆங்கிலத்தை பொருத்தவரை அந்த மொழி மற்றும் இலக்கியத்தின் மீது பிரத்தியேகமான ஆர்வம் உள்ளவர்களைத்தவிர மற்றவர்களுக்கு தொடர்பாடல் ஆங்கிலம் சரியாகத் தெரிந்தால் அதுவே மிக தாராளமாய் போதுமானது.
அப்படியிருக்க ஏன் தாய்மொழியை புறக்கணித்து விட்டு அன்னிய மொழியை முதன்மையாக்கி கட்டிக்கொண்டு அழவேண்டும்? இதை எண்ணி வெட்கப்படாமல் பெருமையாய் நினைக்கும் பிம்பம் ஏன் நிலவுகின்றது என்பதும் என்க்குப்புரியவில்லை.
இந்த மாதிரி சந்தர்ப்பங்களில் தான் பூர்வீகம் தமிழ் நாடாக இருந்தபோதும் இலங்கையில் பிறந்தது எவ்வளவு பெரிய வரம் என்று தோன்றும்.
தாய்மொழியையேனும் சரியாக கற்றுக்கொள்வது உண்மையில் அத்தியாவசியம்.
ஆனால் வளைகாப்பு என்னும் சொல்லை baby shower என்று மொழி பெயர்ப்பது உண்மையிலேயே சரிதானா?
It is very shocking and painful to see many of this generation Tamil people who are born and brought up in Tamil Nadu itself and have Tamil as their Mother tongue do not perfectly know to read write and speak at least a 50% of proper Tamil and not realising how shameful this is.
Even though English is an internationally acclaimed language, except for the people who are especially interested in English language and literature just the communicative English is more than enough for the survival of the rest.
Then why do we have to ignore our own Mother tongue and give priority to a foreign language? Why an impression of feeling proud of this act exists instead of feeling ashamed is something that I really don't understand.
In such situations I truly feel how much I am blessed to be born and brought up in Sri Lanka even though my origin is Tamil Nadu.
It is very important to be able to know at least the Mother tongue properly.
But can someone tell me whether the translation of வளைகாப்பு as baby shower is seriously right?
